The gist
  • Access Bank has appointed Oluseyi Kumapayi as Deputy Managing Director, African Subsidiaries, and Olanrewaju Bamisebi as Executive Director, IT and Digitalisation.
  • Both appointments took effect in late October 2026 after Central Bank of Nigeria approval, Access Holdings told the Nigerian Exchange.
  • The group says the changes shift its focus from expanding across Africa to earning better returns from what it already owns.

Access Bank has appointed Oluseyi Kumapayi as Deputy Managing Director, African Subsidiaries, and Olanrewaju Bamisebi as Executive Director, Information Technology and Digitalisation, its parent company Access Holdings has told the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The appointments took effect on October 27 and October 28, 2026, respectively, after approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Access Holdings announced them in a notice to the exchange dated October 31.

For customers, the message from the bank is about cheaper, steadier service. Access Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Roosevelt Ogbonna, said the bank wants to simplify its technology platforms, improve reliability and deliver better outcomes “at a lower cost to serve”.

What each man will do

Kumapayi moves up from Executive Director, African Subsidiaries, a role he has held since November 2020. He keeps oversight of the bank’s operations across Africa, with a wider brief to lift profitability, capital productivity and cross-border business, and to support the MD in running the bank.

He joined Access Bank in 2002 and was Group Chief Financial Officer from 2007 to 2020. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and holds an Executive MBA from IMD, Lausanne, among other qualifications.

Bamisebi joins the bank’s board from Access Holdings, where he was Executive Director, Information Technology and Digitalisation. His move brings executive responsibility for technology from the holding company into the bank itself.

He will lead efforts to modernise and simplify platforms, strengthen cybersecurity and operational resilience, and speed up digital solutions. He has more than 20 years of technology experience, including senior roles at Equity Group Holdings and as Group Chief Information Officer at Diamond Bank.

One point to note: Nairametrics reported that Bamisebi retired from Access Holdings effective September 30, 2026, after his contract term expired, before this new appointment at the bank.

Why the shift matters

Access Holdings said the changes mark a move from scale to value. Having built a large banking presence across Africa and selected international markets, the group now wants stronger earnings and better returns on capital from those businesses rather than more expansion.

Group Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede said the priority is to “translate that scale into superior performance, greater efficiency, stronger returns on capital and sustainable value for shareholders.”

For ordinary Nigerians, that focus on efficiency and digital channels could shape branch costs, app reliability and how quickly the bank resolves transaction problems. The group did not announce branch closures or job changes.

What happens next: Both men are now in their new roles. Investors will watch the bank’s next results for signs that African subsidiaries are earning more and that technology spending is paying off.
