A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated a North-West Campaign Council as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. The faction is led by its factional national chairman, Nafiu Gombe.
The inauguration followed a meeting of the party's North-West Zonal Caucus with its governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly candidates, and other stakeholders. The meeting held at Giginya Hotel in Sokoto on Friday.
According to a statement on Saturday by Dr Christopher Okechukwu, spokesperson of the faction's 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, Alhaji Nuradeen Lawal Chindo will chair the council. Dr Bello Shehu was named secretary.
Okechukwu said the meeting was called to harmonise positions and agree a strategy for the elections. He said the council will lead and coordinate the party's campaign across the seven states of the North-West.
Youths, women and PWDs told to join campaign
The inauguration was presided over by Hon. Bala Sani Kumo, Deputy Director-General (North) of the campaign council. Chief Cletus Okoye, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the council's Director of Legal and Litigation, administered the oath of office to members.
Kumo asked the new team to build an inclusive campaign. He directed it to bring in the party's youth wing, women's wing and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in its activities across the zone.
The party said it is committed to an issue-based, people-driven campaign centred on good governance, peace and sustainable development.
What happens next
The new council is expected to start coordinating the faction's campaign activities in the North-West. The sources did not say when the party will name its presidential candidate or release a full campaign timetable.
The reports describe the group as a faction of the ADC, led by Gombe. They did not give details of any dispute within the party or how it may affect the campaign.
