  • Chief Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, died on Tuesday at the age of 100.
  • Lagos APM governorship candidate Laja Adeoye mourned him as a teacher, former finance commissioner and pro-democracy activist.
  • Fasoranti marked his centenary in May 2026 with a lecture in Lagos attended by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat.

Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group, has died at the age of 100. He passed away on Tuesday, 20 October, according to condolence messages issued after his death.

Fasoranti was one of the most respected elder statesmen in Yorubaland. Before leading Afenifere, he worked as an educationist and served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State. He was also a pro-democracy activist and a follower of the ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

His death comes about five months after he turned 100. In May 2026, a centenary birthday lecture was held in Lagos in his honour, titled "A Century of Courage and Stewardship of Yoruba Democratic Legacy." Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat attended as chief host, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Tributes from Lagos politics

Laja Adeoye, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate in Lagos State, described the death as an immeasurable loss to Yorubaland and to Nigeria. In a condolence message issued in Lagos on Tuesday, he said Fasoranti "lived a century of purposeful service."

Adeoye said Fasoranti's leadership of Afenifere was marked by integrity, calm wisdom and moral courage. He added that even in his final years, the elder statesman's counsel still carried weight across Yorubaland and among progressive movements nationwide.

He also noted that Fasoranti faced personal tragedies with faith and dignity, and prayed that his soul would rest in peace.

"His life was well lived, and his legacy will endure," Adeoye said.

The APM candidate extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure and Ondo State, the Afenifere family and the wider Yoruba nation.

Why it matters

Afenifere has long been a voice in Yoruba politics and in national debates on restructuring and good governance. Fasoranti's death closes a chapter for a generation of leaders who came up in the Awolowo political tradition, and attention will now turn to who carries that mantle.

For ordinary Nigerians, the group's positions on security, the economy and the place of the South-West in national politics have shaped public conversation for decades. His funeral arrangements and Afenifere's next leadership steps have not been announced in the reports available.
