  • Africa CDC announced the death of Dr. Marie-France Shogogo, who contracted Ebola while working in Beni, DR Congo.
  • The health body said her death shows frontline medical staff need stronger protection during outbreaks.
  • Nigeria has also confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja, with 44 contacts being traced, the health minister said.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has announced the death of a young doctor who contracted Ebola while working in Beni, a city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The continental body named her as Dr. Marie-France Shogogo and announced the loss on its official X account on Friday, 30 October 2026. It said her death was painful to bear and showed the daily danger faced by health workers on the frontlines of outbreaks.

Beni sits in North Kivu province, an area that has seen some of the continent's worst Ebola outbreaks in recent years. Health workers there often operate in difficult conditions, with insecurity and scarce resources making it hard to keep infections from spreading inside clinics.

A call to protect health workers

In its tribute, Africa CDC said the loss made one point clear: people who put themselves at risk to guard public health must be better guarded themselves.

"This painful loss reminds us of an absolute urgency: to protect those who protect us," the organisation said.

The body sent condolences to Dr. Shogogo's family, her colleagues and the wider medical community, and prayed that her soul would rest in peace.

Her death adds to a growing list of health worker fatalities tied to Ebola response work in the region. Each one underlines the human cost of containing the virus.

Why this matters in Nigeria

Nigerian health authorities have already confirmed an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The Federal Government says it is tightening surveillance and response measures across the country.

Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate said 44 close contacts have been identified and contact tracing is already underway. That means officials are watching those people for symptoms to stop any wider spread.
