  • Former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe is reportedly in advanced talks to buy English League One club Bromley.
  • Reports say the 38-year-old is leading a group of investors in negotiations with Bromley owner Simon Stanton-Greaves.
  • Bromley are bottom of League One and sacked their manager last month, so new investment could matter.

Former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe is reportedly close to buying English League One side Bromley, according to reports on Wednesday.

talkSPORT, cited by Punch, Complete Sports and PM News, said the 38-year-old is leading a group of wealthy African investors in advanced negotiations with Bromley owner Robin Stanton-Gleaves. Both sides are said to be working towards an agreement, though none of the reports said a deal has been signed.

If it goes through, it would be Anichebe's first major step into football club ownership. He retired from playing in 2018 and runs Lumira Group, an investment company with interests in sports, education, healthcare and infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

Why Bromley need help

Bromley are in their first season in League One, the third tier of English football, after back-to-back promotions. They went up from the National League to League Two in 2024, then reached League One at the end of last season.

The step up has been hard. Complete Sports reported that Bromley sit bottom of the table with nine points from 13 matches and the division's worst goal difference, minus 20. The club sacked manager Andy Woodman on 22 October after five and a half years in charge, and have not won any of their three games since.

New owners would bring fresh money and a new direction as the club fights to stay up. For Nigerian fans, it is another case of a former Super Eagles player moving from the pitch to the boardroom.

What happens next

The reports say talks are progressing but give no timeline and no price. Anichebe has tried this before: he was linked to non-league club Gateshead last year, but that deal did not happen. He was also recently linked to a proposed £20m leisure project in Liverpool.

During his playing days, Anichebe turned out for Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland in the Premier League between 2006 and 2017, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists. He won 11 caps for Nigeria and scored once, in a 3-0 friendly win over Kenya in 2011. He was also part of the Under-23 team that won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, scoring against Japan.
