  • The APC flagged off its Enugu campaign for 2027 at Nsukka Township Stadium on Wednesday.
  • Governor Peter Mbah listed roads, schools, health centres and gratuity payments as his record.
  • Party leaders said they will take the campaign across the state's three senatorial districts.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State opened its campaign for the 2027 general elections on Wednesday at Nsukka Township Stadium, pledging to work for the re-election of Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu.

Party leaders, office holders, traditional rulers and supporters from the state's three senatorial districts attended, according to Vanguard. Speakers said the crowd showed the party's strength in Enugu and its plan to campaign across the state.

For ordinary residents, the rally was also a chance to hear what the state government says it has done with public money — and what it promises next.

What Mbah says he has delivered

Mbah pointed to road projects, including the dualisation of the Penoks–T-Junction–Ugwogo-Opi-Nsukka road. He said the trip from his office to the T-Junction took two to three minutes, compared with up to 30 minutes or more before the road was dualised.

He said the contractor had given a realistic date to commission the road before the end of this year. He also cited the 40km Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Umualor-Ikem dual carriageway, which he said links communities in the north of the state and opens a route towards the North Central zone.

On education, the governor said the state had recruited more than 6,000 teachers who are being trained under the Smart Green Schools programme. On health, he said Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres are being built in all 260 electoral wards, each with staff and a two-bedroom residential unit.

He listed the reopening of the Presidential Hotel, the International Conference Centre, United Farm Products Limited, Songhai Enugu Integrated Farm and Sunrise Rice Flour Mill as signs of economic revival.

Mbah said his government had approved ₦32 billion and begun paying gratuity arrears dating back to 2000. He also said Enugu Air would start a direct flight to London in a few weeks, with flights to the United States and China before the end of the first quarter next year.

He acknowledged that road work remains unfinished and restated his target of 10,000 kilometres of roads. "We are not measured by our words; we are measured by our results," he said.

He credited Tinubu's economic reforms with creating fiscal room for states, and thanked the President for the South East Development Commission, gas pipeline approvals and the appointment of an Nsukka indigene as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria.

Party leaders rally support

Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai said the election was a chance to keep the current programmes going and accused the opposition of spreading false information. Mbah also said the opposition had not presented a manifesto.

Those at the event included the Director-General of the Enugu APC Campaign Council, Chief Charlie Mbah; APC Deputy National Chairman (South) Dr Ben Nwoye, who represented National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; state APC Chairman Dr Martin Chukwunwike; Senators Osita Ngwu and Ikeje Asogwa; Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Dr Kingsley Udeh; and Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly Hon. Uche Ugwu.

Former old Anambra governor Senator Jim Nwobodo was represented by Commissioner for Local Government Matters Deacon Okey Ogbodo.

What happens next: The state APC said it will begin a statewide campaign tour. The 2027 elections are still more than a year away, and the sources did not name the party's opponents or give a date for the polls.
