  • APM Oyo Central senatorial candidate Olufemi Ajadi urged Nigerians to recognise teachers at the NUT Oluyole branch's 60th anniversary in Ibadan.
  • Oyo NUT chairman Hamzat Ajibola Fatahi said teachers now receive salaries on the 25th of each month and declared support for all APM candidates in 2027.
  • Oluyole council chairman Akeem Olatunji said his administration has funded NUT branch activities and was asked to help with a building project.

Teachers in Oyo State deserve more recognition and support, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate for Oyo Central Senatorial District, Olufemi Ajadi, said in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Ajadi spoke at the 60th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oluyole branch. He said teachers have shaped the lives of Nigerians who now hold important positions in different sectors, and that their work should be appreciated in words and in material support.

The senatorial hopeful said he has been backing the branch's ongoing building project. He said he hopes to do more for teachers' welfare if voters send him to the Senate in 2027.

Council support and a union endorsement

Oluyole Local Government Chairman Akeem Olatunji, who is also the APM candidate for the House of Representatives in the area, said his administration has consistently sponsored NUT Oluyole branch activities since he took office. He said the council had also been approached to contribute to the union's building project.

Olatunji urged residents to show appreciation for teachers, saying the best way to reward kindness is to return it. He also asked teachers to support continuity in Oyo State so that gains already recorded are not lost.

He said he, Ajadi and other APM legislative candidates would honour teachers at the next Teachers' Day celebration if they win in 2027 and take office.

The Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hamzat Ajibola Fatahi, said teachers welcome positive change despite past hardship. He contrasted earlier concerns about salary payment with what he described as the current practice of teachers receiving their salaries on the 25th of every month.

Fatahi then declared the union's backing for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On behalf of the entire members of teachers of Oyo State, we are all voting for all APM candidates in 2027,

he said.

What happens next

The 2027 general elections are still more than a year away, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not opened the formal campaign period. For now, the pledges are promises made at a union event, not government policy.

For teachers in Oyo State, the practical issues raised are pay timing and welfare. For voters in Oyo Central, the event shows how early candidates are courting organised groups such as unions.
