Aston Villa threaten legal action against pundit Jamie Carragher over fan insults
- Aston Villa say they will sue pundit Jamie Carragher over what the club calls unacceptable insults about the club and its fans.
- Carragher told Villa fans to shut up on a podcast while discussing manager Unai Emery and Manchester United.
- Carragher says it was a joke and that he has praised Emery and Villa for years.
Aston Villa say they will take legal action against football pundit Jamie Carragher over comments he made about the club and its supporters on a podcast this week.
The club announced the move in a short statement on its social media pages on Friday, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris.
"Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans," the statement said. Sawiris added that the club "will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football."
Villa did not say what legal grounds the action would rest on, and had not given further comment at the time of reporting.
What Carragher said
The row started on the Stick to Football podcast, where Carragher discussed whether Manchester United might try to hire Villa manager Unai Emery.
He argued that there is a pecking order in football, with bigger clubs able to take managers and players from smaller ones. "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United," he said, before telling Villa fans to "shut the f*** up".
He also said Emery, who has managed Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, would surely want the chance to manage "a giant again".
Carragher has since said the remarks were a joke, made after Villa fans criticised him for suggesting Emery might be interested in the United job.
"It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd," he said on social media. He said he hoped clips would show him praising Emery and Villa, and noted he had said how pleased he was that Villa won the 2026 Europa League in Istanbul.
On The Overlap Daily, he called Emery the best manager in the Premier League and said it was only natural that United would look at him.
Why it matters
Emery has turned Villa around in four years, taking the Birmingham club into the Champions League twice and ending a 30-year wait for a trophy with last season's Europa League win.
This season he has had to rebuild after six of the players who started that final left in the transfer market.
At Manchester United, head coach Michael Carrick is under pressure. United are 16th in the Premier League on seven points and have not won in eight matches. They face Chelsea on Saturday, and reports say Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are among the names being considered if Carrick goes.
Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, works as a pundit for Sky Sports and CBS.
What happens next: Villa have not said when or where they will file any case, and it is unclear what they would claim. For now, the dispute is being fought out in statements and on social media.
