Atiku's son commissions solar boreholes for Almajiri schools in Kano

The gist
  • Muhammad Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has commissioned solar-powered boreholes for Almajiri Tsangaya schools in Kano State.
  • Aides say the project is part of a wider plan to sink 1,000 solar boreholes in communities across the country.
  • The statement says the aim is clean water, better hygiene and dignity for children in traditional Islamic learning centres.

Alhaji Muhammad Atiku Abubakar, a son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has commissioned solar-powered boreholes for Almajiri Tsangaya schools in Kano State, his office said.

The project is meant to give pupils and their teachers at the traditional Islamic learning centres easier access to clean, safe water.

Tanimu A. Tahir, special adviser on youth engagement and strategy to Atiku Abubakar, announced the commissioning in a statement. He said the Think Tank for Atiku facilitated the project.

According to the statement, the boreholes form part of a larger humanitarian push linked to the former vice president that aims to provide 1,000 solar-powered boreholes in communities across Nigeria.

Why it matters

Clean water is a daily struggle in many parts of Nigeria, and Almajiri schools are often among the least served. Pupils there frequently depend on wells, streams or bought water, which raises the risk of disease and adds to the cost of running the schools.

Tahir said the scheme is built to widen access to drinking water, back hygiene and sanitation, and lighten the daily burden on vulnerable people.

He said the choice of Almajiri Tsangaya schools was deliberate, describing it as a recognition of the need to protect the welfare and dignity of children in these institutions.

“For the pupils and communities benefiting in Kano, these boreholes represent more than access to water; they are a symbol of hope, care, and investment in a healthier future,” Tahir said in the statement.

He added that the effort shows the Atiku family's commitment to community development and to improving the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

Muhammad Atiku Abubakar is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

What happens next

The statement did not say how many boreholes have been sunk so far, how many are planned for Kano, or how the remaining sites in the 1,000-borehole target will be chosen. It also did not give a timeline or say who is funding the work.

For residents of the benefiting communities, the immediate test will be whether the boreholes keep running after the commissioning, since solar-powered pumps need regular servicing to stay useful.
