Awaziem scores twice as Konyaspor beat Gençlerbirliği 2-0 in Turkey
- Chidozie Awaziem scored in each half as Konyaspor beat Gençlerbirliği 2-0 in the Turkish Süper Lig.
- The win ended Konyaspor's run of three league games without a victory.
- Awaziem said his teammates deserved credit for the goals and the three points.
Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem found the net twice on Sunday as Konyaspor beat Gençlerbirliği 2-0 at home in the Turkish Süper Lig.
The Nigerian opened the scoring two minutes before the break, sending the hosts into half-time with the lead. Gençlerbirliği pushed forward after the restart looking for a leveller, but Konyaspor held firm at the back.
Awaziem struck again 11 minutes into the second half, turning the ball in from close range after the visitors failed to deal with a corner. The second goal sealed the points and a clean sheet for Konyaspor.
The result also stopped a run of three league matches without a win for the home side.
Awaziem credits teammates
Speaking after the match, Awaziem said the win came from the whole squad rather than his own display. He told Pusulahaber that he was pleased with the team's effort and proud of his own performance.
"I scored two goals, but I scored those two goals thanks to my teammates," he said.
The brace was the first time the defender has scored twice in a single senior match, according to Complete Sports. It takes his tally to two goals in seven Süper Lig appearances for Konyaspor this season.
For Nigerian fans, it is a welcome sight: a Super Eagles defender delivering at both ends of the pitch, and in a league where he faces strong attacking opposition week in, week out.
What happens next
Konyaspor will look to build on the result in their next league fixture, with Awaziem expected to keep his place in defence. His form will also be watched closely by Super Eagles selectors ahead of Nigeria's coming international engagements.
