Barcelona report PSG to UEFA over chainsaw tifo before 4-2 defeat

The gist
  • Barcelona have complained to UEFA about a PSG fans' banner showing a masked figure cutting up their badge.
  • The tifo read "Massacre, Parisian style" and was shown before Tuesday's Champions League game in Paris.
  • PSG won the match 4-2, ending Barcelona's 11-game winning run this season.

Barcelona have reported Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA over a banner displayed by PSG supporters before Tuesday's Champions League match at the Parc des Princes, according to reports from ESPN cited by Nigerian outlets.

The giant tifo, unfurled behind one of the goals as the players walked out, showed a masked figure wielding a chainsaw and cutting through Barcelona's badge. Underneath were the words: "Massacre, Parisian style." Pyrotechnics were also used to mimic sparks from the chainsaw.

Barcelona are said to consider the imagery overly aggressive and offensive, and have taken the matter to European football's governing body. UEFA has not announced any action.

What happened on the pitch

The banner overshadowed the build-up to a lively game between two of Europe's strongest sides. PSG won 4-2, with goals from Désiré Doué, Lucas Hernández, Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz.

Barcelona twice levelled through Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal, but Vitinha put PSG back in front soon after Yamal's equaliser, and Ruiz scored five minutes later to settle it.

The loss was Barcelona's first of the season and ended an 11-match winning run. It was also coach Hansi Flick's first defeat of the campaign. PSG have now won all three of their Champions League games this season.

PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his players afterwards, saying the first half was exceptional before his side struggled in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. He also credited his substitutes with helping the team regain control.

Speaking on PSG's official website, he said: "What an atmosphere! The tifos from our fans were, once again, unbelievable."

What happens next

Both clubs return to domestic action this weekend. PSG face Lyon in a top-of-the-table Ligue 1 clash, while Barcelona host rivals Real Madrid in the Clásico.

It is not yet clear whether UEFA will open a disciplinary case over the tifo. For Nigerian fans who follow both clubs closely, the bigger immediate question is how each side responds in those league games.
