The gist
  • Amanpour, 68, said she spent months thinking about her future before deciding to go.
  • Her daily CNN International show becomes weekly in early 2027 and ends in May.
  • She also ends her PBS programme this year but keeps her podcast going.

Christiane Amanpour is leaving CNN after 43 years, the network's long-serving international correspondent has announced. She is 68.

In a statement shared by CNN, Amanpour said the decision came after a long period of reflection. She described the network as her partner of more than four decades and said she was looking forward to new projects ahead.

Her exit will be gradual rather than immediate. Her daily programme, Amanpour, on CNN International will move to a weekly slot at the start of 2027, then end in May. She will leave the company the month after that.

She is also winding down her PBS show, Amanpour and Company, which finishes at the end of this year. Her podcast, The Ex Files, which she co-hosts with her former husband, the ex-US diplomat Jamie Rubin, will continue.

Why it matters beyond the newsroom

Amanpour built her name covering wars, disasters and major world events, and interviewing presidents and prime ministers. For Nigerian viewers who follow international news on cable and online, she has been one of the most recognisable faces explaining global crises, from the Middle East to Europe.

Her departure lands at a moment of change at CNN. The network is now under Skydance ownership after Paramount, which Skydance controls, completed its $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery on 6 October. That deal put CNN and CBS under the same corporate roof.

In her farewell message, Amanpour stressed the value of independent reporting and urged journalists to stick to the facts. She said she would keep supporting CNN's tradition of independent journalism.

Amanpour has also been open about her health. She revealed in 2021 that she had ovarian cancer, and later said the disease had returned, calling it an invisible killer. She has pressed women to go for screening and to take every scan available to them.

What happens next

Viewers will still see her on CNN International through the first half of 2027, though less often once the daily show becomes weekly. Her PBS programme ends in December, and the podcast continues.
