Afrobeats star Davido has marked what would have been his late son Ifeanyi's seventh birthday with a short, emotional message online.

Ifeanyi Adeleke was born on October 20, 2019, to Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, and his wife Chioma Adeleke. He would have turned seven on Tuesday.

In a post shared on his Instagram stories and on X, the singer wrote: "Happy birthday son .. me and mommy miss and love you! Keep flying high!"

The message made clear that he and Chioma still carry the loss, four years on.

How Ifeanyi died

Ifeanyi died on October 31, 2022, just 11 days after his third birthday. He drowned in a swimming pool at the family's home in Banana Island, Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed drowning as the cause of death after an autopsy. The police spokesperson at the time, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the autopsy "confirms the boy (Ifeanyi) drowned."

The death drew widespread grief across Nigeria, with fans, entertainers and public figures sending condolences to Davido and Chioma.

Since then, Davido has regularly acknowledged dates tied to his son, and Tuesday's tribute followed the same quiet pattern.

Fans remember

Nigerians responded to the post with messages of sympathy and remembrance.

One user, @bridgetayomoh, wrote that the death "still breaks my heart" and prayed that his soul continues to rest in peace. Another, @simsbeautyplace, called it "one of the most painful death Nigerians ever experienced."

Others sent birthday wishes to the child. @ogoojuliet wrote: "Happy 7th posthumous birthday champ, may God keep resting your peaceful soul."

For many Nigerian families, the date is a reminder of how quickly a child's life can be lost at home, and of the grief that stays with parents long after.
