  • Students of Medicine, Law and Engineering would get N250,000 yearly, according to BusinessDay and Leadership.
  • The promise was made at the Ibom Ignite 2026 Conference in Uyo and would start after the May 29, 2027 swearing-in.

Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has promised to raise the yearly bursary for students in government-owned tertiary institutions from N50,000 to N200,000 if he is re-elected in 2027.

He announced the plan at the Ibom Ignite 2026 Conference in Uyo, held at Ibom Hall. The event ran over two days, and the governor spoke on the second day.

BusinessDay and Leadership reported that students studying Medicine, Law and Engineering would receive N250,000 a year under the new arrangement. Punch's report mentioned only the N200,000 figure.

Eno said the increase would take effect only if he wins the February 2027 governorship election and is sworn in for a second term on May 29, 2027.

He said the aim is to help students from less privileged homes cope with tuition and other school costs, which have been rising along with accommodation and learning materials.

What else the governor promised

Eno said his administration would keep free and compulsory education at primary and secondary school levels.

He also spoke about the N50 million Ibom Ignite business grant given to young entrepreneurs, urging them to treat the money as seed capital rather than spending it on personal wants.

According to him, more than 500 Compassionate Homes have been built for less privileged residents across the state's 31 local government areas, with each beneficiary also getting a N500,000 business grant.

He promised to build another 1,000 Compassionate Homes, with the same grants, in all wards of the state if re-elected.

On skills, the governor said trainees at the Youth Development Centre in Oron were close to graduating, with hundreds earning Microsoft and Google certifications. Some, he said, had learned coding and found remote jobs, and the programme would be extended to other areas.

What happens next

The bursary increase is a campaign promise, not yet in force. Students will keep receiving N50,000 until after the 2027 election and the swearing-in. Akwa Ibom voters go to the polls in February 2027.
