Enugu APC adds names to campaign council as CAN disowns list
- Enugu APC released an updated campaign council list on Friday, with Governor Peter Mbah still chairman.
- The Christian Association of Nigeria in Enugu said its leaders were named without being consulted.
- CAN asked the public to disregard any suggestion it endorsed the APC or joined its campaign.
The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has released an updated list of its campaign council, saying more stakeholders have asked to join the team ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said the update was necessary because more people across the state had shown they were ready to help deliver President Bola Tinubu, Governor Peter Mbah and all APC candidates in 2027.
But the list has drawn a public objection from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Enugu, which says its leaders were named without being asked.
What changed on the list
According to the party's statement, signed by state chairman Dr Martin Chukwunweike and state secretary Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie, the leadership of the council did not change. The additions were mainly to the membership, with minor housekeeping.
Governor Mbah still chairs the 51-directorate council. His deputies are Deputy Governor Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, Dr Chukwunweike and Secretary to the State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
An advisory council includes former Senate President Ken Nnamani, former old Anambra governor Senator Jim Nwobodo, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (rtd), Prof. Barth Nnaji, Mr Frank Nweke Jr., Prince Arthur Eze and Senator Chuka Utazi, among others.
Chief Charlie Mbah is Director-General, while Dr Eric Oluedo is Secretary-General. The council also has coordinators for the three senatorial districts and directors for media, fundraising, security, women's mobilisation and entertainment, among others.
CAN's objection
CAN's Enugu chapter said in a disclaimer dated Thursday, 29 October 2026 and signed by its secretary, Rev. Innocent Offor, that neither the association nor the religious leaders named were consulted before the list was published.
It said the inclusion of its leaders, including the state CAN chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Anezichukwu Obodo, Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, should not be read as an endorsement of the APC or as participation in partisan politics.
"The Church belongs to Christ and must remain a home for all, irrespective of political affiliation," the statement said.
CAN said its members hold different political views and that tying Christian leaders to a party without their consent could divide the Church. It asked the public, especially Christians, to disregard any suggestion of endorsement, and urged those who published the list to correct the impression.
The APC has not publicly responded to the disclaimer in the reports reviewed.
What happens next
The party is expected to keep rolling out its campaign structures ahead of 2027. For now, the disagreement is over names on a list, not over any candidate's place on the ballot.
