The gist
  • Enyimba were held to a 0-0 draw by Warri Wolves at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba on Sunday.
  • The nine-time NPFL champions have now won just two of their first nine matches this season.
  • Forward Wonah William said the team failed to take their chances, while Warri Wolves planned for the draw.

Enyimba's difficult start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season continued on Sunday when Warri Wolves left Aba with a 0-0 draw.

The result at the Enyimba International Stadium means the nine-time champions have picked up only two wins from their opening nine matches.

For a club of Enyimba's stature, that is a worrying return, and it leaves the People's Elephant with plenty of ground to make up if they are to challenge at the top of the table.

Missed chances in Aba

Enyimba forward Wonah William said the team played well but could not finish their opportunities.

"We played very well, but we failed to convert our chances in the game,"

William said, according to Complete Sports.

He said the players would work on their finishing in training before their next match, away to Nasarawa United in Lafia.

"We will shift our focus to our next match against Nasarawa United, and I believe we can get a positive result there,"

he added.

Warri Wolves, meanwhile, made no secret of their plan. Technical adviser Usman Abdallah said the Seasiders set out to earn a point in Aba and were pleased to get it.

"I'm very happy with the draw against Enyimba because we worked for it,"

Abdallah told the club's media, according to Daily Post.

He said his players were fit and comfortable on the ball, and that the smooth Aba pitch suited their game.

"We planned for it, and it happened,"

he said.

What happens next

Enyimba travel to Lafia to face Nasarawa United, where William believes the team can get a positive result.

For supporters in Aba, the bigger question is whether the club can turn its season around quickly. Two wins in nine games is not the form Enyimba fans expect, and another dropped result on the road would add to the pressure.
