The gist
  • Dem don commission four transmission substations for Kano, and e add 544MW of wheeling capacity to di state and di national grid.
  • Di projects dey Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi, and dem go help reduce pressure on facilities wey don overload and serve demand wey no dey met.
  • Di Rural Electrification Agency also switch on two solar mini-grids for Kano communities wey no get light for over 16 years.

Kano don gain four new transmission substations, and di Federal Ministry of Power talk say dem go add 544 megawatts of wheeling capacity to di state and di national grid.

Di Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) build di projects join body with Kano State Government. Dem dey Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe commission dem on Thursday, according to statement from im media aide, Adeola Labzy. Di Permanent Secretary of di ministry, Mahmuda Mamman, TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz and di Kano State Commissioner for Energy also dey there.

For residents and businesses, di hope na steady bulk supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas. Di ministry talk say di new facilities go reduce pressure on substations wey don dey carry more load than dem suppose carry, and open room for demand wey no dey met.

Wetin each site add

  • Walalambe: a new 80MW substation with two 40MVA transformers. Six outgoing feeders go serve Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and nearby communities.
  • Kumbotso: 330kV infrastructure with 300MVA and 100MVA transformers.
  • Dakata and Dan-Agundi: each one get extra 100MVA transformer at di 132kV level.

Di Dan-Agundi work important well well because fire don damage dat substation before. With capacity restored, e go fit serve Kano ancient town, di Emir Palace and surrounding communities again.

Di ministry also talk say Lee Group, one big industrial firm, don reconnect to grid after more than 30 years wey e dey use im own power.

Tegbe talk say im ministry work na to put infrastructure wey go let businesses thrive, and e ask host communities to guard di facilities against vandals. Abdulaziz make di same appeal, e urge residents to respect transmission right-of-way corridors and report any suspicious activity around di equipment.

One caveat: extra transmission capacity no mean say light go increase for house by itself. Wetin consumers actually receive also depend on how much power dem generate, how well distribution networks cope and whether di wider grid fit carry am.

Mini-grids for two communities

Separately, di Rural Electrification Agency (REA) commission two mini-grids for Kano, and e end more than 16 years without power for di communities involved.

Di systems na 195kWp plant for Ballagaza and 70kWp plant for Marayar Rogo, for Warawa. Di agency talk say dem go serve 2,222 households.

REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu talk say private firm Alfuttaim Nigeria Limited put im own money to build and go run di mini-grids, while government subsidise part of di cost through di DARES programme, wey World Bank back. E thank Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting di project.

Aliyu talk say di DARES programme dey work towards 1,350 mini-grids nationwide and e don already reach more than five million Nigerians with new or better electricity.
