Five people have died after a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago collided head-on with a private car on the Minna-Bida Road, according to reports from the scene. The crash happened on Monday morning at Gidan Mangoro, on the outskirts of Minna, as the governor's entourage returned from Bida.

Outlets do not agree on the death toll. Vanguard and Punch reported five deaths, Daily Post reported four, and Daily Trust reported three. Daily Trust said two victims were brought to Minna General Hospital dead and a third died in its emergency unit. Vanguard quoted a hospital staff member saying three died at the scene and two later from their injuries.

Those killed in the private car were suspected to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), residents told reporters. Daily Post named three of the dead as Nafisat Abubakar Aguye, described as a hub manager, Ibrahim Ado Bayero and George. Vanguard identified the driver as Mrs Nafisa, an NGO staff member. Daily Post said the car was driven by a woman who lived in Gidan Mangoro. The identity of the other victim was not immediately available.

Punch reported that the Hilux was carrying the Director-General of the Government House, Dauda Chikuba, and that its driver died at the scene. Daily Post said Chukuba, a former chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, was receiving treatment at IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna. Daily Trust reported that a former council chairman in the Hilux suffered fractures to his legs.

What witnesses and officials say

Two residents, Danjuma Umar and Abdullahi Musa, told reporters the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking by the Hilux, which they said rammed into the oncoming car in its own lane. The accounts put the time at about 11am or 11:35am. Punch quoted an eyewitness saying the convoy was at high speed.

The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aishat Sa'adu, confirmed the crash but said her officers arrived after victims had been evacuated. She confirmed casualties but could not give a number.

Niger State police spokesperson Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun also confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He did not give the names or number of the deceased.

Daily Post reported that a medical officer at Minna General Hospital raised concerns about staffing to handle the injured and was allegedly arrested by security operatives attached to the governor. The circumstances of that reported arrest had not been independently verified.

Vanguard and Punch reported that the convoy was returning from a condolence visit by the governor to the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, over the death of the Sagi Nupe, Hajia Aisha. Daily Post described the trip as the Fida'u prayer for the late Sagin Nupe. Daily Trust said only that the governor was returning from Bida.

What happens next

Police say investigations are ongoing. For travellers on the Minna-Bida Road, the crash is a reminder of the risks of overtaking on the highway.
