Harry says he wants to mend ties with King Charles and Prince William

The gist
  • Prince Harry told GQ he hopes to repair his relationship with his father and brother.
  • He said his children are settling into a British school after the family's move to the UK.
  • Harry also said King Charles, who has been treated for cancer, is getting better.

Prince Harry says he wants to make peace with his father, King Charles III, and his elder brother, Prince William, describing family reconciliation as more important than the disputes that have divided them.

He spoke in an interview with GQ magazine, filmed in New York in September and released this week. It was his first interview since he and his wife, Meghan, moved their family back to Britain.

Harry, 42, said some people would rather the rift stayed open, but he is not one of them. With so much else going wrong in the world, he said, patching up a family should come first.

His spokesperson said the remarks were not meant as a swipe at William or anyone else in the royal family.

Why the move back to Britain

Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, where their son Archie was a baby and their daughter Lilibet was later born. The couple announced in August that they would return to Britain for an extended stay, and the children started at a British school.

Harry said watching Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, settle into school has meant more to him than he expected. He said the children are enjoying it and gaining an experience they could not get elsewhere, and he was careful to add that he was not knocking American schools.

Being on UK soil for longer than a short visit also puts him closer to relatives and old friends, he said, and gives the children plenty of playmates.

He said the move was not long in the planning. He and Meghan had discussed it, and when things fell into place they went with it.

On his father's health, Harry said the King, who has been receiving cancer treatment, is getting better.

Old wounds and the press

Harry said he has stopped letting grief over his mother, Princess Diana, who died in 1997, weigh him down. He now carries her memory through his work instead.

He rejected any suggestion that he wants public sympathy, pointing to the support network around him and the therapy he has done.

He also said he hopes his troubled relationship with parts of the British press can improve, and that both sides could leave past battles behind.

Harry has spoken before of wanting to reconcile, including in a BBC interview in May 2025. There has been little public sign of a thaw with William.

What happens next: The sources give no date for any meeting between Harry and his father or brother, and no timetable for the family's stay in Britain.
