  • The Arewa Consultative Forum's Kano chapter has appointed a three-member team to run its affairs.

The Kano State chapter of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has appointed a three-member interim leadership team after its chairman, Dr Goni Faruk Umar, resigned.

The forum's state Public Relations Officer, Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim, said the step was part of efforts to restore unity and settle internal disagreements that had slowed the chapter's work.

The interim team is made up of the District Head of Tofa, Alhaji Isyaku Umar Tofa; Ambassador Bala Mohammed Sani; and Hajiya Rabia Husaini Adamu.

Retired General Haliru Akilu announced the appointments on Saturday at a joint meeting of the chapter's Board of Trustees members from Kano and its executive committee. The meeting held at the Late Amina Habib ACF Secretariat in Kano.

Why the change matters

Akilu said the three will lead the chapter for the rest of the current executive committee's tenure, until a substantive chairman is elected. He said the decision was taken to promote reconciliation and strengthen cooperation among members.

He confirmed receiving Umar's resignation letter, in which the former chairman cited the demands of his busy schedule. Akilu thanked him for his service and said he hoped Umar would keep offering advice to the chapter.

"Consultation before decision, integrity before convenience and service before self," Akilu said, describing the spirit that should guide members.

He urged members to set aside their differences and work together, saying the meeting was meant to settle outstanding issues rather than reopen old disputes.

Akilu also praised Alhaji Abubakar Idris Ahmed, an Assistant Controller-General of Narcotics, for holding the chapter together as acting chairman for about four months while Umar was away.

The new interim leaders, in separate remarks, thanked members for their confidence and promised to work for unity and effective administration until a new chairman emerges.

According to Akilu, a united Kano ACF chapter is better placed to help tackle problems facing Kano and Northern Nigeria, including insecurity, poverty, education and youth empowerment.

What happens next

The interim team will run the chapter until the current executive committee's tenure ends and a substantive chairman is elected. The forum did not say when that election will hold.
