The Kano State House of Assembly has screened and confirmed six commissioner nominees put forward by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, clearing the way for them to join the State Executive Council.

The confirmation came during Monday's plenary, presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma'il Falgore. It followed a motion by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, seconded by the Minority Leader, Usman Abubakar.

The nominees are Ibrahim Namadi, Mukhtar Ishaq Yakasai, Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, Idris Garba Mustapha and retired Air Commodore Salisu Yusha'u.

According to the Assembly's Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, lawmakers from Doguwa, Tudun Wada, Fagge, Kiru, Madobi, Dala and Aliyu Bagwai/Shanono constituencies took part in the deliberations. All six were confirmed without objection.

Why it matters

Commissioners head ministries and supervise how state programmes reach residents, from health and education to security and youth welfare. Filling the vacant seats means Kano's cabinet can take decisions and roll out policies that affect everyday life in the state.

Hussaini said the nominees met the requirements for appointment, noting that some had served as commissioners before while others held senior public offices, including the chairmanship of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC). He said the House was impressed by their experience.

Daily Trust reported that the nominations were part of efforts to fill vacant commissioner positions after political realignments in the state.

Speaking after the exercise, Yusha'u, who described himself as a security expert, said he would work with security agencies and local communities to strengthen security and promote peace at the grassroots.

Malumfashi, a former KANSIEC chairman, stressed the need to promote science and technology education, innovation and entrepreneurship so residents can gain practical skills and support themselves.

Tsanyawa, a former Commissioner for Health and Environment, said tackling drug abuse, especially among young people, would be a priority and called for collective action.

Other nominees, Mukhtari Ishaq, Ibrahim Namadi and Idris Garba, also pledged to contribute to the state's development and improve living standards.

What happens next

The House will send its resolution to the executive arm. Governor Yusuf is then expected to swear in the new commissioners and assign them portfolios.
