  • Gunmen attacked Binnari in Karim Lamido LGA on Friday, killing residents, according to community accounts.
  • Governor Agbu Kefas condemned the killings and told security agencies to arrest those responsible.
  • He also pointed to ₦1 billion approved for the state peace bureau to support recovery in the area.

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has condemned the killing of residents in Binnari, a community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, after armed men attacked the town on Friday.

Residents said the attackers came into Binnari and killed people, according to Channels TV and Daily Post. Neither outlet gave a death toll, and there was no official figure from the police in the reports.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Emmanuel Bello, the governor said the killings were unfortunate and directed security agencies to move quickly to calm the area and guard lives and property.

Kefas said no stone should be left unturned in finding and arresting those behind the attack, adding that nobody involved should escape the law, whatever their standing in society.

Peace money and displaced residents

The governor restated his administration's pledge to fight insecurity and bring lasting peace to Karim Lamido and other troubled communities in the state.

He said his government is working to help displaced residents return home safely and to rebuild the confidence of people who have lived through earlier rounds of violence.

As part of that effort, Kefas recently approved ₦1 billion for the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management. The money is meant to handle the fallout from past crises and back peace efforts in Karim Lamido.

The governor sent his condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the repose of their souls. He asked residents to stay calm and work with security agencies as they try to restore normal order.

Karim Lamido, in the northern part of Taraba, has seen repeated attacks in recent years, and residents have often raised concerns about safety.

What happens next

The reports did not say whether anyone has been arrested or whether more security personnel have been sent to Binnari. Residents will be watching to see if the arrests the governor demanded actually happen, and whether the peace bureau money reaches communities still waiting to go back to their homes.
