Kukkiwon demonstration team arrives Abuja as Korean Ambassador Cup begins Thursday
- The 14th Korean Ambassador Cup taekwondo event opens in Abuja on Thursday with para-athlete classification.
- The Kukkiwon World demonstration team will perform in Abuja, organisers say.
- The competition runs from the National Stadium sports hall to Mo Arena and ends October 26.
Abuja will host the 14th Korean Ambassador Cup taekwondo championship, with the Kukkiwon World demonstration team set to perform in the Nigerian capital, organisers have said.
The event begins on Thursday with the classification of para-athletes who will attend the world para championship, according to the President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (NTF), Tayo Popoola. Officials of the World Taekwondo classifier will be on hand for that exercise and for the competition itself.
Competition starts at the sports hall of the National Stadium in Abuja and ends at Mo Arena, also in the capital. The 2026 edition closes on October 26.
Why it matters for Nigerian sport
The arrival of the Kukkiwon demonstration team, the showcase squad of taekwondo's world headquarters in South Korea, puts the Abuja meet before a global audience. For Nigerian fighters, it is a rare chance to compete in front of international classifiers and officials on home soil.
Popoola said preparations had been intense and that entries had to be closed early because of the volume of registrations.
"The registration has been overwhelming till we had to stop and now we are fully set for the competition," he said.
He added that the Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Yo-an Jeong, is pleased with the arrangements, and that the National Sports Commission (NSC) is keen on the event.
The NSC, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, has backed taekwondo activities, and the federation says it is supporting this meet as well. Popoola said all arrangements are in place.
What happens next
Para-athletes go through classification on Thursday. The main competition then runs through the weekend, with the Kukkiwon team's demonstration among the highlights, before the cup ends on October 26.
