The gist
  • Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, Works Minister David Umahi and EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede are expected at the NUJ Enugu Correspondents' Chapel press week finale.
  • Umahi will give the guest lecture on journalism and the 2027 polls; Olukoyede gives the keynote on the media and anti-corruption.
  • The event holds on Thursday, 22 October 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre in Enugu, with awards for several public figures.

Three of the country's most visible public officials are billed to appear in Enugu on Thursday, 22 October 2026, for the closing day of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu Correspondents' Chapel press week.

Governor Peter Mbah will attend as chief guest of honour, the Works Minister, David Umahi, will give the guest lecture, and the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, will deliver the keynote address, according to a statement from the organising committee.

The statement was signed by the committee's chairman, Emma Ugwueze, and secretary, Damian Duruiheoma. It said the gathering will focus on ethical reporting, democratic development and the media's part in the anti-corruption effort.

Chief Anthony Ani, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a former Enugu attorney-general and commissioner for justice, will chair the occasion.

What the speakers will address

Umahi's lecture is titled 'Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism: 2027 Polls in Focus', pointing to next year's general elections. Olukoyede will speak on the role of the media and other stakeholders in keeping the fight against corruption going.

The committee said the two were picked for their records in public service, citing the minister's road rehabilitation work and reforms the EFCC chairman has brought to the commission.

Awards will also be presented. Those listed by the organisers include the APC's Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr Ben Nwoye; the head of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) in Enugu, Dr Peter Okwudilichukwu Ogbobe; and the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa.

Others are Peter Eze, who represents Enugu at the Federal Character Commission; Amobi Ezeaku, general manager of Rangers International Football Club; and medical doctor Celestine Chijioke Ugwuoke.

The chapel said the finale will draw journalists, government officials, political leaders and security chiefs. Punch and Vanguard both reported the line-up; Punch named the venue as the NUJ Press Centre, while Vanguard called it the Lawrence Ugwuanyi Press Centre.

Why it matters

For ordinary Nigerians, the talks touch on two things that shape daily life: how next year's elections are covered, and whether corruption cases are pursued fairly. What the officials say in Enugu may signal how they intend to engage the press in the run-up to 2027.

The press week began on Sunday, 18 October, with a thanksgiving service at the Christian Victory Prayer Ministry in Enugu. A football match and an outreach to vulnerable children were also held.

What happens next: The finale holds on Thursday at the NUJ Press Centre in Enugu, where the lectures and awards are expected to take place.
