The gist
  • Actress Mercy Aigbe has defended the widow of gospel singer Toluwanisings against online attacks.
  • She asked the singer's family to stop granting interviews about private disputes.
  • The widow spoke at a tribute night in Ibadan on October 27, drawing social media criticism.

Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has spoken up for the widow of late gospel singer Toluwanisings, asking people attacking the young woman online to show her compassion.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, October 28, Aigbe said the widow is grieving the loss of a husband and the father of her two young children. She described the trauma of watching a spouse die and then facing life as a single parent.

Her message to the widow's critics was simple: "Let us be human. Let us show compassion."

The post followed a tribute night held in Ibadan on Tuesday, October 27, where the widow gave an emotional speech. That speech drew a wave of social media attention, much of it directed at her rather than at the singer's memory.

A plea to the family

Aigbe also addressed Toluwanisings' family directly. She urged them to stop granting interviews that drag private family disagreements into public view.

In her words, not every quarrel needs a microphone and not every family matter should become content. She asked them to protect the singer's legacy, his children and the dignity of the woman who was his wife.

She acknowledged that both sides are mourning the same person and said she hopes they can find common ground away from the cameras. The two children, she added, deserve to grow up surrounded by love and unity rather than public conflict.

This is not the first time Aigbe has weighed in. She had earlier criticised bloggers she said were making a painful situation worse for the widow and her children.

What happens next

There is no indication yet of how the family will respond to the appeal. For now, the public conversation around the singer's death continues, with Aigbe's post adding a call for restraint from fans and commentators.
