Mexico accepts Reno Omokri as Nigeria's ambassador after months of waiting

The gist
  • Reno Omokri says Mexico has formally accepted his appointment as Nigeria's ambassador there.
  • The approval, called agrément, was handed to the foreign ministry's protocol director in Abuja.
  • He will also cover Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and had waited since March for the nod.

Mexico has given its formal approval for Reno Omokri to serve as Nigeria's ambassador to the country, ending months of waiting for the diplomatic green light.

Omokri announced the development in a post on X, saying the Mexican embassy's top diplomat in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, presented the approval document to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The document, known as an agrément, is the consent a host country gives before a nominated ambassador can take up the post. Without it, an ambassador-designate cannot resume duties.

According to Omokri, his posting covers Mexico as well as Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, which he will handle concurrently.

How the posting unfolded

President Bola Tinubu named Omokri among ambassadorial nominees in November 2025, alongside former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu. The Senate cleared the nominees in December 2025.

On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved postings for 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City. His confirmation, however, stayed pending because Mexico had not yet sent its formal acceptance.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among countries yet to communicate acceptance for two outstanding appointments. The ministry said talks were ongoing and it expected the approvals to come.

Omokri had also pushed back on claims that Mexico had turned him down. On Channels Television's Politics Today in June, he said the delay was down to diplomatic procedure and the country's preparations to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada.

He previously worked as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is widely known for his political commentary.

What happens next: With Mexico's consent in hand, Omokri can now proceed toward formally taking up his post in Mexico City. The sources did not say when he will present his credentials or leave for the mission.
