Elon Musk has named Johann Sebastian Bach, the 18th-century German composer, as the greatest musician of all time. He made the call in a post on X, the platform he owns.
"Johann Sebastian Bach is the Shakespeare of music. Best there ever was," Musk wrote, according to Daily Post and PM News.
Musk, who heads Tesla and SpaceX, is the world's richest man. PM News described him as the first trillionaire, a claim the other report did not make.
By calling Bach the Shakespeare of music, Musk compared the German composer to William Shakespeare, England's best-known playwright.
Who was Bach?
Bach was a German composer, keyboardist, violinist, organ expert and music director. He is remembered for writing an enormous amount of music for many instruments and voices.
His best-known works include the Brandenburg Concertos for orchestra, the Cello Suites and the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. For keyboard players there are the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier.
His organ pieces include the Toccata and Fugue in D minor and the Schübler Chorales. Among his choral works are the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor.
Why it matters here
Musk's post is an opinion, not an award or a ranking by any music body. But when the world's richest man praises a composer, it can send new listeners to music that is centuries old.
His words may also stir debate among fans of other greats, from Mozart and Beethoven to Nigerian legends like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Music taste is personal, and there is no single correct answer.
What happens next is simple: expect the post to keep drawing replies on X, with fans of other composers making their own case.
