Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has congratulated former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) on his 92nd birthday, describing him as an enduring symbol of national unity.
The governor's message was contained in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, and issued in Jos on Tuesday.
Mutfwang said he was joining the government and people of Plateau, as well as Gowon's family, friends and well-wishers, in celebrating the elder statesman.
He described Gowon as "a repository of wisdom, and an unwavering advocate of peace" whose life of service and patriotism continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.
Why it matters
Gowon led Nigeria as Head of State during the civil war and is widely remembered for his role in keeping the country together and for his later reconciliation efforts. Mutfwang said that commitment to preserving Nigeria's unity during one of its most challenging periods remains a defining part of his legacy.
The governor said Gowon's message of unity and mutual understanding is still relevant as Nigeria confronts security challenges and pursues development and national integration.
He added that Plateau was honoured to celebrate a father whose life and legacy reflect patriotism, selfless service, integrity and a commitment to peace.
Mutfwang prayed that God would preserve the former Head of State in sound health, peace and strength, with many more fruitful years.
He also expressed hope that Gowon would continue to offer counsel and inspiration to present and future generations in the pursuit of a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.
