The gist
  • The Nigerian Exchange Group won Africa's Best Exchange at the 2026 Euromoney Markets Awards in London.
  • The award covers market development in 2025, a year the All-Share Index rose 51.19 per cent.
  • Managing director Temi Popoola credited regulators, issuers and investors for the recognition.

The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) Plc has been picked as Africa's Best Exchange at the Euromoney Markets Awards 2026, the company said on Wednesday.

The prize was handed out at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London. According to the group, judges looked at how it built market infrastructure, pushed digital innovation and helped companies raise capital, with the work judged on 2025.

For everyday Nigerians, the recognition is a signal about the market where many hold shares, mutual funds and pension savings. A busier, better-run exchange can make it easier for businesses to raise money and for savers to put money into listed companies.

What the numbers show

The award came in a strong stretch for Nigerian equities. In 2025, the NGX All-Share Index climbed 51.19 per cent, the value of shares traded more than doubled to ₦5.96 trillion, and total market value closed the year at ₦99.38 trillion.

The run has carried into 2026. By 16 October, the index had added 59.07 per cent since January, turnover stood at ₦7.82 trillion against ₦4.50 trillion a year earlier, and market capitalisation had reached ₦160.73 trillion.

Group Managing Director Temi Popoola said the award belonged to the wider market, thanking regulators, policymakers, issuers, investors and stockbrokers for their support. He said widening digital access, making trading more efficient and linking up with other African exchanges were aimed at building a market that can raise money for businesses and offer more investment options.

Popoola also pointed to NGX Invest, the group's electronic platform for public offers and rights issues. He said it helped raise more than ₦2.8 trillion during the banking sector recapitalisation, and that its network had grown past 180 channels across stockbrokers, banks and fintechs by September 2026, including a WhatsApp option for subscriptions.

On climate finance, he said the group's NGX Net-Zero Programme, run with DEG Impulse gGmbH and Africa Foresight Group, has worked with over 50 companies, with 19 signed on as community members. The programme helps firms set emissions-reduction targets and plan for greener financing.

The group also said Nigeria moved to a shorter T+1 settlement cycle in June 2026, meaning trades are completed faster, and that it is holding talks with other African exchanges to make cross-border investing easier.
