- LASEMA said one person died and three adult men were rescued and taken to hospital.
- Search and rescue continued as responders checked whether more workers were trapped.
A two-storey building under construction collapsed in the early hours of Friday on Akinola Street, by Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, Lagos, leaving one person dead and three adult men rescued.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Friday.
According to LASEMA, a distress call came in at 12:10 a.m. and its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu base arrived at the scene two minutes later. The team found that the structure, still being built, had come down, with construction workers suspected to be trapped inside.
Responders heard groaning sounds beneath the rubble, suggesting possible survivors, and an excavator was brought in to help clear debris and reach those trapped.
The three rescued men were given pre-hospital care by LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to hospital.
Other agencies at the scene included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and police officers. Reports differ on which police division attended: LASEMA's statement named the Alagbon Division, while Punch, quoting Channels TV, reported the Alakara Division.
What happens next
Search and rescue operations were still ongoing on Friday as emergency teams worked to establish whether more workers remained under the debris. LASEMA said the cause of the collapse had not been determined and would be investigated by the relevant regulatory agencies.
Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery. He restated the government's commitment to tackling substandard construction and to strengthening monitoring and enforcement with the Lagos State Building Control Agency to prevent similar incidents.
Building collapses remain a frequent danger in Lagos, where fast-paced construction and weak enforcement have been blamed in past incidents. For residents and workers, the risk is personal: many site workers are hired informally and work without safety cover.
