Osimhen closes in on Galatasaray's foreign scorers record

By Naija Breaking Newsroom1 min read
The gist
  • Victor Osimhen has scored 68 goals in 83 games for Galatasaray, placing him third on the club's all-time list.
  • Mauro Icardi leads the foreign scorers' chart with 77 goals, with Gheorghe Hagi second on 72.
  • Osimhen scored twice in Monday's 2-1 derby win over Fenerbahçe and has nine goals this season.

Victor Osimhen is closing in on the record for the most goals scored by a foreign player in Galatasaray's history, after taking his tally for the Turkish club to 68 goals in 83 matches.

That total puts the Super Eagles striker third on Galatasaray's all-time scoring list, according to reports. Former Argentina international Mauro Icardi leads the foreign scorers' ranking with 77 goals, while Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi sits second with 72.

Osimhen, 27, moved closer to that mark on Monday night when he scored twice in Galatasaray's 2-1 derby win over Fenerbahçe at Rams Park. The brace was the latest sign of his sharp form for Okan Buruk's side.

He has now recorded nine goals and three assists in nine appearances across all competitions this season, and his scoring average of 0.82 goals per match is among the best in the club's history.

Why it matters to Nigerian fans

Osimhen remains the Super Eagles' main striker, and his club form is closely watched at home ahead of Nigeria's next fixtures. A strong season in Turkey keeps him in the conversation among the top forwards in Europe.

If he keeps scoring at his current rate, the Icardi record could fall within this campaign. He needs 10 more goals to overtake the Argentine and become Galatasaray's leading foreign goalscorer.

What happens next

Galatasaray continue their Super Lig and European commitments in the coming weeks, giving Osimhen regular chances to add to his tally. Each goal now moves him further up a list that includes some of the biggest names to have worn the yellow-red shirt.
