Pregnant woman delivers baby boy inside Lagos danfo, LASEMA says

The gist
  • A pregnant passenger went into labour mid-journey on a Lagos commercial bus and gave birth to a boy.
  • LASEMA said paramedics stabilised mother and child before taking them to a nearby health facility.
  • Witnesses in viral footage suggested naming the baby Abiona, a Yoruba name for a child born on a journey.

A pregnant woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a commercial bus in Lagos after she went into labour unexpectedly during a journey, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said.

Fellow passengers and people around the scene helped her through the delivery, while others prayed for a safe birth, according to the agency. The boy was delivered safely.

LASEMA paramedics stabilised both mother and child at the scene before moving them to a nearby health facility for post-natal care.

"The woman delivered a healthy baby boy," LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement.

Footage of the moments after the birth spread on social media, with witnesses suggesting the child be named Abiona — a Yoruba name traditionally given to a child born on a journey or along the road.

Why it matters

For many Lagos residents, the danfo is the everyday way to work, market and school. A sudden labour on board is rare, but it shows how quickly ordinary commuters and emergency responders can step in when a woman has no time to reach a hospital.

It also puts a spotlight on maternal emergency care in a crowded city, where traffic can turn a short trip to a clinic into a long one.

The reports describe the setting slightly differently. Vanguard and Daily Post both said the woman was travelling when labour began, while the LASEMA statement quoted by both outlets describes her as going into labour "while waiting for transport."

The incident follows a similar case at Onipanu Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road, where a pregnant woman also delivered a baby boy before being taken to a medical facility. In that case, LASEMA said its responders arrived promptly after being alerted.

What happens next

Mother and son are receiving post-natal care at a health facility, according to LASEMA. The agency did not give further details on their condition or the hospital involved.
