PSC promotes 3,800 police officers, including two new DIGs
- The Police Service Commission approved promotions for more than 3,800 senior officers after exams and interviews.
- Two AIGs, Olaolu Adegbite and Dankombo Morris, were elevated to Deputy Inspector-General of Police.
- The list also includes 10 new AIGs, 17 new Commissioners of Police and the FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh.
More than 3,800 senior police officers have been moved up the ranks, the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced on Thursday after a plenary meeting in Abuja.
The promotions followed written examinations and oral interviews, according to a statement from the commission's protocol and public relations head, Torty Njoku Kalu. The meeting was chaired by the PSC chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu.
At the top of the list, two Assistant Inspectors-General become Deputy Inspectors-General: Olaolu Adegbite, who runs the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, and Dankombo F. Morris, in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters in Makurdi, Benue State.
Adegbite previously headed operations at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He holds the national honour of MFR and has studied in Lagos, Moscow and at Harvard Kennedy School, according to the commission. Morris, from Gombe State, studied History at the University of Maiduguri and was once Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State.
Who else moved up
Ten Commissioners of Police were promoted to AIG. They include Ohagwu Felix Ndukwe (Ondo State), Afolabi Wilfred Olutokunbo (Abia State), Shetima Jauro Mohammed (Nasarawa State), Omosanyin Olusegun, Ogbodo Ugobueze, Taylor Lennox Olanrewaju, Regina Cosmas Udoette, Nwogoh Martin, Ibrahim D. Gotan and Danjuma I. Yahaya.
Seventeen Deputy Commissioners rose to Commissioner of Police, among them Nache Bashir Liman, Sirajo Lawal Salihu, Ayeleye Adegboyega E., Isiaka O. Salau, Usman Shaik Adamu, Aminu Maiwada Garba, Abdulkarim Musa Waziri and Muhammad Yusuf Adamu.
Further down, 85 Assistant Commissioners became DCPs and 49 Chief Superintendents became ACPs. Another 245 Superintendents were promoted to CSP, 498 Deputy Superintendents to SP, and 3,218 Assistant Superintendents to DSP.
Among the new CSPs is Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command in Abuja, along with her Adamawa counterpart Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje and Rivers State's Abah James. The new DCPs include Dr Ruth Oyinmearelu Okunbo, medical director of the police hospitals in Deidei and Utako, Abuja.
Argungu congratulated the officers and said the new ranks should push them to do more in protecting lives and property and enforcing the law.
For ordinary Nigerians, the changes matter most at the command level: the officers now running state commands, zones and divisions are the ones residents deal with when they report a crime or seek help.
