Nigerian midfielder Quadri Liameed has been discharged from hospital after he was knocked unconscious during a league match in Spain on Saturday night.
Liameed, who plays for Sabadell in Spain's second division, was struck on the head by Albacete's Jose Corpas as the Albacete player attempted to volley a loose ball in the air. The 24-year-old fell to the ground and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Sabadell later said Liameed regained consciousness at the hospital and was kept for observation and tests. The club then announced that he had been discharged after the examinations showed no further medical concerns, and that he would travel back to Sabadell with his teammates.
In a statement, the club said: "The best of the news has arrived! Quadri Liameed has received medical discharge after all the tests have come out well and will return tonight to Sabadell!" Sabadell also thanked Albacete's medical staff for their help.
The match ended 2-1 in Albacete's favour.
Why it matters
Liameed has been a regular for Sabadell this season, playing in all 12 of the club's league games and providing three assists. His absence would have been a blow to the team's push for promotion to La Liga, where they currently sit nine points behind the leaders.
For Nigerian fans, the incident is a reminder of the physical risks players face in Europe's lower leagues, and the relief that a serious head injury did not turn out worse.
What happens next
Liameed has been cleared to return to Sabadell with the squad after his tests came back without further medical issues.
