Reps ask FG to rename Federal University, Wukari, after TY Danjuma

House of Representatives don ask Federal Government to rename Federal University, Wukari, wey dey Taraba State, after retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, to recognize wetin lawmakers call him contributions to national development.

The resolution come after dem adopt one motion for Wednesday plenary wey Speaker Tajudeen Abbas preside over. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni and Ayuba Zaku Dampar join body sponsor the motion.

Under the proposal, the school go become T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW). The House talk say the change go depend on the necessary amendment of the university enabling Act.

Lawmakers also ask the House Committee on University Education to engage relevant stakeholders and work out the legislative steps wey needed to make the renaming happen.

Why the lawmakers want am

When e present the motion, Gbefwi note say dem establish the university for 2011 to widen access to higher education, promote research and support national development.

He talk say Danjuma record for military, for public service and for philanthropy, including support for education, health and vulnerable communities, deserve recognition. If dem name the university after am, e go honour that work and keep the legacy of service for generations to come.

Bamidele Abbas, wey be chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, second the motion, and voice vote pass am.

Speaker Abbas thank Gbefwi for bringing the motion, and talk say: "Honourable Jonathan, thank you for remembering our leader, our mentor. Your motion correct well well."

Danjuma, wey come from Taraba State, serve as Chief of Army Staff from 1987 to 1979 and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003. Him TY Danjuma Foundation dey support work for health, education and community development.

For now, the resolution na only request to the Federal Government. The name change no go take effect until dem amend the university enabling law and complete other administrative steps.
