Spain's football authorities have called off 24 Copa del Rey first-round matches after a high-speed train collision in Toledo province killed at least 30 people and left about 80 injured.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said the games, due to be played on Wednesday afternoon and evening, were suspended "as a mark of respect and solidarity" with the victims.

The crash happened on Wednesday morning when two high-speed trains collided between Urda and Los Yebenes, roughly 130 kilometres south of Madrid. Emergency services were at the scene.

Toll still being confirmed

The death toll is still provisional. Reuters put it at at least 30, while other reports said at least 31. The number of injured was put at 80.

In its statement, the federation said: "The entire Spanish football family stands united in grief over this tragedy and stands ready to assist the authorities in helping the victims of this devastating accident."

The RFEF said it would give details later on a revised schedule and new kick-off times for the postponed matches.

The 18 first-round games played on Tuesday went ahead as planned. The 24 called off on Wednesday now wait for new dates.

Travel disruption for clubs

The collision also disrupted rail services between Madrid and Andalusia, which affected travel plans for some clubs and their officials.

The Copa del Rey is Spain's main knockout cup competition, and the first round usually involves smaller clubs from across the country.

What happens next: The RFEF is expected to announce new dates for the 24 postponed matches. Spanish authorities are still working to confirm the final casualty figures from the crash.
