Tinubu says Obi 'ran from erosion' as he touts Lagos record at Uyo rally
- Tinubu told an APC rally in Uyo that Peter Obi failed to tackle erosion as Anambra governor.
- He said he confronted the Atlantic Ocean as Lagos governor and praised Umo Eno on erosion.
- Eno pledged two million Akwa Ibom votes for Tinubu if the Ibom Deep Seaport is delivered.
President Bola Tinubu has attacked Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), saying he failed to tackle erosion while he was governor of Anambra State.
Tinubu spoke on Friday at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally held in his honour at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He was in the state to inaugurate projects by Governor Umo Eno's administration.
According to the President, Obi could not confront erosion in Anambra, while he himself faced the Atlantic Ocean as governor of Lagos.
"I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, confronted the Atlantic Ocean. I tamed it for you," he said.
He praised Eno for what he described as efforts to tackle erosion in Akwa Ibom, saying the governor was working for the people.
Party switching questioned
Tinubu also questioned Obi's movement between parties. He said Obi had gone from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party and now to the NDC, and asked whether that was a sign of leadership.
"They lack the leadership, character and traits," he said.
The remarks come as Tinubu seeks support for his re-election in 2027. He said his policies were aimed at breaking what he called the circle of poverty and ignorance.
Eno, for his part, pledged that Akwa Ibom would deliver two million votes for the President if the Federal Government delivered the long-awaited Ibom Deep Seaport.
The seaport is a long-planned deep seaport project in the state. A working seaport would mean jobs, easier movement of goods and new business for traders and transporters in Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states.
What happens next
The 2027 campaign is now openly under way, with the President making his record and that of his rivals the centre of his message. Voters in Anambra and across the South-East will hear the erosion claim repeated, and it is likely to draw a response from Obi's camp.
The Akwa Ibom vote pledge also puts pressure on the Federal Government to show progress on the Ibom Deep Seaport before the election.
