The gist
  • US President Donald Trump complimented rapper Nicki Minaj's figure during a midterms rally in Port Huron, Michigan.
  • Minaj, 44, shared videos from aboard Air Force One before appearing on stage with Trump.
  • Trump said his earlier remarks about an Ohio senator's body were made in fun and called coverage of them fake news.

US President Donald Trump praised rapper Nicki Minaj's figure while sharing a stage with her at a midterms rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, October 25.

The event held at McMorran Place Sports & Entertainment Centre. Minaj, 44, posted videos of herself aboard Air Force One before joining Trump on stage, according to The Sun.

Trump first addressed viral comments he had made about the body of Republican Ohio senator Jon Husted. He said he had been examining Husted because he did not know the senator was a great athlete, and joked about his hands.

At the Michigan rally, Trump said his earlier remarks were "fake news" and had been made "in fun".

He then turned to Minaj, saying he had "looked at one hell of a beautiful a** before – Nicki Minaj. That's hard to miss." He asked her to stand up and added: "I hope Nicki wasn't insulted, but we love Nicki. She's been with us for a long time."

Why it matters

The rally is part of the run-up to the US midterm elections, when control of Congress is decided. What American presidents say at such events travels fast online.

The Sun reported that Minaj shared videos from Air Force One before the rally, though the reports did not say what role, if any, she played in the campaign itself.

What happens next

The midterms are expected to dominate US political coverage in the coming weeks, and Trump is likely to hold more rallies. Whether Minaj appears at further events has not been announced in the reports.
