Two men described by police as suspected area boys have died after stabbing each other at Ogunpa in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday.

The Oyo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident. He said the bodies of the two men had been taken to a hospital mortuary.

According to accounts from the area, the fight broke out at about 12:45 pm after the two men disagreed over how to share money that had been given to them. The exact cause of the quarrel has not been established, but people in the area said it followed claims that one of them wanted a bigger share.

What happened at Ogunpa

Reports say the argument turned into a fight, and both men seized knives from a trader's shop.

One of them was stabbed in the neck and died at the scene, according to the accounts. The other was injured in the right wrist and was rushed to Naomi Hospital in the Oke Padre area, where he reportedly died from heavy blood loss before he could get effective treatment.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Iyaganku Division led officers to the scene and to the hospital, from where the bodies were evacuated.

Police have not said whether anyone has been arrested, and they have not named the two men.

Why it matters

Ogunpa is a busy trading area in the heart of Ibadan, and disputes that turn violent there put traders, shoppers and residents at risk. Small disagreements over money are common in crowded markets, and this case shows how quickly they can turn deadly when weapons are within reach.

Residents who see a quarrel getting out of hand can call the police rather than step in, and traders can keep knives and other sharp tools out of easy reach.

Police have not released further details on the case. Anyone with information about the incident can report it to the Iyaganku Division.
