UK lists short courses Nigerians can take without a student visa

The gist
  • UK Home Office guidance says courses under six months can be done on a Standard Visitor permission.
  • The October 8 guidance covers study, exchanges, training, workshops and short traineeships under Erasmus+.
  • Longer or work-based courses still need a Student visa and a licensed sponsor.

Nigerians planning a short course in the United Kingdom may not need a Student visa, according to new Home Office guidance published on October 8, 2026.

The guidance sets out which learning activities foreigners can do under the Erasmus+ programme using a Standard Visitor permission, which allows a stay of up to six months.

In plain terms, anyone whose course or traineeship runs for less than six months can generally travel on the visitor route instead of applying for a full Student visa.

What the visitor route covers

According to the Home Office document, a visitor can study at an accredited institution, join a school exchange, or take part in an academic, scientific or research exchange.

The list also includes giving or receiving training, attending workshops, seminars and conferences, and job shadowing.

  • Short-term traineeships that meet the rules
  • Skills competitions
  • Coaching or training assignments at a sports organisation
  • Preparatory visits

Young people under Erasmus+ can also use the visitor route for youth exchanges, youth participation activities, training and networking events, and study visits. Youth workers can come for job shadowing too.

For applicants under 18, a traineeship lasting up to 30 days also falls under this route.

When a Student visa is still needed

Longer or more structured programmes still require a Student visa. That applies to people aged 16 and over studying a further or higher education course, a course with a work-based element, or a traineeship with a licensed sponsor.

The school or institution must hold a student sponsor licence and issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies before the application can go ahead.

Both reports of the guidance stress that applicants should check the rules for their particular course and route before travelling, since the right permission depends on what they plan to do, how long they will stay and their age.

What happens next: Anyone planning study or training in the UK should confirm with their institution whether the course falls under the visitor route or needs a Student visa, and apply for the correct permission before booking travel.
