The gist
  • BAT-IG, NDPHC and Kaduna State have started building a 7.5MVA injection substation in Rigasa, Igabi LGA.
  • Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe performed the groundbreaking for Governor Uba Sani on Friday.
  • Residents of the crowded community have reportedly gone about 15 years with inadequate electricity.

Construction has started on a new electricity substation in Rigasa, a crowded community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where residents have reportedly lived with poor power for about 15 years.

The groundbreaking was held on Friday. Deputy Governor Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe stood in for Governor Uba Sani at the ceremony.

The work is being driven by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), working with the Kaduna State Government.

What is being built

The package includes a 7.5MVA 33/11kV injection substation, a two-kilometre 11kV distribution line and a 1.5-kilometre 33kV line.

For ordinary residents, the aim is simple: steadier power for homes, shops and small businesses that have long relied on alternatives or gone without.

Balarabe said better supply would help businesses grow, raise productivity and reduce the strain on households. She said the state would keep using partnerships to deliver infrastructure.

Bamidele Atoyebi, convener of BAT-IG, said the project came after residents raised their concerns. He argued that political work should not stop at campaigns and rallies but should solve practical problems.

When you identify a problem, you do not simply talk about it, you find a solution to it,

he said.

Atoyebi said the group had helped facilitate more than 100 interventions in different sectors, and described the Rigasa work as part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said the expected gains go beyond electricity, listing more economic opportunities, stronger businesses, better security and improved livelihoods.

The NDPHC's executive director for networks, Bello Babayo Bello, attended for the company's managing director and chief executive, Jennifer Adighije. Also there were the NDPHC's executive director for strategy and commercial, Patrick Obahiagbon, and the District Head of Rigasa, Mohammed Aminu Idris.

Others at the event included the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who is BAT-IG's grand patron, and Senator Abu Ibrahim. Adeniyi Tinubu, deputy director of logistics and operations at the All Progressives Congress 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, was also recognised.

What happens next

The NDPHC is to implement the project with the state government. Residents and businesses in Rigasa will be watching for the added distribution capacity to translate into more reliable power as work moves forward.
