Yusuf warns Kano appointees: sell empowerment items, lose your seat
- Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says any appointee or APC official caught selling empowerment items will be sacked.
- Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila gave out 16 vehicles, 400 motorcycles and sewing machines in Kano South.
- The governor, represented by APC chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa, also spoke of winning in 2027.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has said he will remove any political appointee or All Progressives Congress (APC) official who sells items meant for empowerment programmes in the state.
He spoke on Monday at the 12th empowerment programme of Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District. The governor was represented at the event by the APC's Kano State chairman, Umar Doguwa.
"Whoever sells this empowerment item will lose his position. I will personally sack him. It is meant for your welfare, not for selling, especially party officials," the governor said, according to the accounts of the event.
At the event, 16 vehicles went to APC local government chairmen, while 400 motorcycles were handed to party officials across the district. Two hundred tailors each received two standard sewing machines and one industrial machine.
What the senator says he has done
Senator Sumaila said the programme was his way of turning the trust of his constituents into real development and steady income. He admitted the last three years have been hard economically but said he remains committed to bringing benefits to Kano South.
He listed work he said he had done in security, roads, farming, schools, health and water. On security, he praised local vigilantes, known as Yan Sa-kai, for their role in guarding Falgore Forest in Doguwa Local Government Area.
He said roads and bridges had been built, drainage systems put in place and damaged roads repaired. Farmers, he said, received machines, tools, better seeds and thousands of bags of fertiliser for both wet and dry season farming.
He also said boreholes powered by solar, motor and hand pumps had been sunk, more than 1,000 students in secondary and tertiary schools had received support, and health centres had been renovated and equipped.
Sumaila thanked God for the chance to serve and asked his people to keep supporting him. He said no one person can meet every request from constituents.
Why it matters
Empowerment items are meant to help small businesses and families earn a living. When they are sold off instead, the people they were meant for lose out, and public money is wasted.
The governor also said he believes the APC will win the 2027 general elections and asked party members to keep working towards that goal.
