APP to pick between Tinubu, Atiku and Obi before end of November
- The Action Peoples Party says it will name its preferred 2027 presidential candidate this month.
- Chairman Uche Nnadi says President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are being considered.
- The party plans conventions and rallies in Kaduna for the north and Owerri for the south.
The Action Peoples Party (APP) says it will announce its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election before the end of November. Its national chairman, Uche Nnadi, a lawyer, disclosed this after the party's National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
Nnadi said the party is weighing three major contenders: President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The choice, he said, will be made public at the party's National Convention, where the APP will also spell out where it stands on the 2027 race.
Conventions in Kaduna and Owerri
Nnadi said the party will hold its National Convention and Campaign Rally in Kaduna for the northern region and in Owerri for the south. Both events will feature the formal presentation of the party's flag and a chance to unveil its political direction ahead of the elections.
He said the leadership wants an inclusive process, with the final position reflecting the views of stakeholders, and that the party is working to build consensus among members as the electoral cycle approaches.
For ordinary Nigerians, the announcement matters because it signals how the 2027 field is shaping up. A party backing a candidate can shift votes and resources in states where it has a following, and the choice of Kaduna and Owerri for its events points to a deliberate push in both halves of the country.
Both Leadership and ThisDay reported the same details from the NEC meeting, including the three names under consideration and the plan to decide before the end of November.
What happens next
Nigerians should watch for the party's convention dates and the names it finally puts forward. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has its own timetable for party primaries and candidate nominations, and the APP's moves will be measured against it.
Until the convention, the three names remain under consideration, not chosen.
