Chelsea beat 10-man Man Utd 2-0 as Carrick's winless run hits nine
- Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute and Cole Palmer added a penalty at Stamford Bridge.
- Lisandro Martinez was sent off after a second yellow card for the foul that led to the spot-kick.
- United stay one point above the relegation zone and face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Manchester United's troubled season deepened on Saturday as Chelsea beat them 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, leaving manager Michael Carrick without a win in nine matches.
Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer settled the Premier League game. United remain just one point above the relegation zone and could end the weekend in the bottom three.
United had the better of a goalless first half but could not finish. Bruno Fernandes, recalled after being left out against Bournemouth last weekend, blazed over from Bryan Mbeumo's cross. Mbeumo then failed to reach a Fernandes delivery at the back post, and Amad Diallo was twice denied by Chelsea's stand-in goalkeeper Mike Penders.
United did put the ball in the net through Matheus Cunha, but the Brazilian was ruled offside.
Rogers strikes, then Martinez sees red
The game turned five minutes after the break. Rogers collected the ball inside the centre circle and drove straight at the United defence before lifting it over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United's hopes of a comeback were then hit by Lisandro Martinez's dismissal. Already on a yellow card, the Argentine was booked again after a VAR review of a challenge on Wesley Fofana, and referee Peter Banks awarded a penalty. Palmer's spot-kick was touched by Lammens but still crept into the bottom corner.
Chelsea had a third goal from Estevao ruled out for offside. Home fans could be heard chanting about Carrick being sacked as their side controlled the closing stages.
Carrick, a former United midfielder, kept his job after last weekend's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth but is now under fresh pressure. United have won just two of their 12 matches this season.
What happens next
United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. They have lost two of their three European games so far, and another defeat would leave them facing both an early exit and the financial cost that comes with it.
Chelsea, managed by Xabi Alonso, return to winning ways after their Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool in midweek.
