Court-supervised DNA samples taken from Mohbad's remains and son Liam
- Samples were collected from the late singer's remains and from his son Liam under court supervision.
- The test followed an application by Mohbad's wife, Omowunmi Aloba, which the court granted.
- The lawyer says no date has been set for the results, which will go to the court.
DNA samples have been collected from the remains of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, and from his son Liam, under the supervision of a court. The collection took place on Saturday, October 31, according to Punch.
The exercise followed an application by Mohbad's wife, Omowunmi Aloba, asking the court to order a supervised DNA test to settle the question of Liam's paternity. The court granted the application and fixed October 31 for the samples to be taken. A welfare officer was appointed to supervise the process.
Samples were taken from Mohbad's remains at Mainland General Hospital, also called the Infectious Diseases Hospital, in Yaba, Lagos. They were then escorted under tight security to the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, where Liam's samples were also collected.
Why it matters
The paternity question has been public since Mohbad's death in September 2023. His father, Joseph Aloba, has consistently questioned whether Liam is his grandson and has sought a DNA test, but proceedings on his request have faced delays. The court-approved test now moves the matter from social media argument to forensic evidence.
Security was heavy at the venue. Punch reported that concerns about possible disturbances followed calls by the late singer's father to his online supporters, and suggestions on social media that protests be staged there.
The day was emotional for the family. Mohbad's mother, Abosede; his younger brother, Adura; and his wife, Omowunmi were present, and the identification of the singer's body was a particularly difficult moment.
What happens next
Barrister Kabiru, the lawyer for Mohbad's wife, said the date for releasing the results is not yet known. He said the parties will be notified through the court once the results are ready. He thanked the court and the Nigeria Police Force for handling the exercise professionally.
The results are expected to give the court scientific evidence to help resolve the paternity question.
