  • A fire razed Maroosh Bakery on Civic Centre Road in Ajasa, Kano metropolis, on Friday morning.
  • The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident through its spokesman, Kabiru Isah Jafar.
  • The cause of the fire, the extent of damage and whether anyone was hurt were not yet known.

A fire has destroyed Maroosh Bakery in the Ajasa area along Civic Centre Road in Kano metropolis, the Kano State Fire Service said on Friday.

The service's spokesman, Kabiru Isah Jafar, said it received an emergency call about the fire on Friday morning. He confirmed the incident to reporters the same day.

As of Friday evening, the cause of the fire had not been established. It was also not clear how much damage the bakery suffered, or whether anyone was injured or killed.

The fire matters to residents well beyond the bakery's owners. Local bakeries supply bread to households, small shops and roadside sellers across Kano, and a knocked-out bakery can mean higher prices or shorter supply for families who depend on cheap bread daily.

What happens next

The fire service has not said whether it has opened an investigation into the blaze. Nigerians in the area will be watching for word on the cause and on whether the bakery can resume operations.

Naija Breaking will update this story as the fire service releases more details.
