Iseyin council sponsors 18 students through university in three years
- Iseyin Local Government in Oyo State has sponsored 18 students to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, over three years.
- Chairman Rasaq Fadiran said the students were screened by the institution and study medical, engineering, technology and digital courses.
- Six new beneficiaries for 2026 resumed classes on Monday after orientation.
The Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State has paid the way for 18 students from the community to study at the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, over the past three years.
The council chairman, Rasaq Fadiran, gave the figure while speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Thursday. He said the students were picked after a thorough screening carried out by the university itself.
According to him, the beneficiaries are studying courses in medicine, engineering, technology and basic digital skills — fields he said would add value to Iseyin and to Oyo State as a whole.
The six students who joined the scheme for 2026 have already resumed academic activities. Fadiran said they reported on Monday after orientation programmes organised by the university's management.
Why it matters
For families in Iseyin, the scheme is a rare cushion against the cost of university education, which has climbed steadily across Nigeria in recent years. Fadiran said the programme lets his administration step in early for bright students who want to pursue medicine and technology but lack the means.
He credited Governor Seyi Makinde's government with supporting the scheme, saying the state provided the platform and encouragement that made it possible.
"Since I became the Chairman of Iseyin Local Government three years ago, we have sponsored 18 brilliant students who are indigenes of the community," Fadiran said.
He added that Oyo State is known for leading in good things, and that the scholarship is adding value to the community in academic development.
The two reports of the announcement differ slightly in one detail: Tribune's account attributes one quote to "Hon. Bisi Fadiran" where Punch attributes the same words to Rasaq Fadiran. Neither outlet explained the difference.
What happens next
The 2026 set is now in class. The council has not said whether it will take on a new batch next year, or how much the sponsorship costs per student.
