Kane signs new Bayern deal to 2029 after Ballon d'Or season

The gist
  • Harry Kane has signed a new Bayern Munich contract that runs until 2029.
  • The 33-year-old England captain was in the final year of the deal he signed after joining from Tottenham in 2023.
  • Bayern say the Ballon d'Or winner remains central to their plans.

Harry Kane will stay at Bayern Munich until 2029 after putting pen to paper on a new contract, the German champions said on Thursday.

The England captain, 33, had been heading into the last year of the four-year deal he signed when he left Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £86m in 2023. Bayern did not disclose the value of the new terms.

Kane said Munich now feels like home for him and his family, and that he was eager to extend his stay. He praised the squad and manager Vincent Kompany, and said he wants to add more trophies at the club.

Why Bayern moved quickly

Kane's first three seasons in Germany have been prolific. He scored 61 goals in 51 games last season as Bayern won the league and cup double, and has 156 goals in 161 appearances for the club in all competitions.

In September he became the quickest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, getting there in 98 games. He has won the league's Golden Boot three times in a row.

Last month he was named the world's best male player at the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Englishman to take the award since Michael Owen in 2001. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund called him a leader and "the best all-round striker in the world".

Talks over the extension had been going on since August, with German media reporting that the length of the deal was the main sticking point.

What happens next

Kane stays central to Bayern's season. The club are unbeaten in Europe's top five leagues so far and top the Bundesliga on goal difference ahead of Borussia Dortmund. They sit 13th in the Champions League table with four of eight league-phase matches played.

The Champions League is the one major prize missing from his time in Munich; Bayern have reached the semi-finals twice in his three campaigns there.

For England, Kane remains captain and record scorer. He has 73 goals in 65 caps and will equal Peter Shilton's record of 125 appearances if he plays against the Czech Republic at Wembley.
