Kano agency seizes 5,964 expired soft drinks at Singer Market
- The Kano State Consumer Protection Council seized 5,964 bottles of expired soft drinks at Singer Market.
- Officials said the raid followed a tip that a trader had stocked drinks past their expiry dates.
- The council warned traders against tampering with expiry dates and intimidating its officers.
The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has seized 5,964 bottles of expired soft drinks from Singer Market in Kano, saying the goods were allegedly stocked for sale to unsuspecting buyers.
The council said it acted on a report that a trader had kept a large quantity of drinks whose expiry dates had passed. Enforcement officers were sent to the market, where they investigated and removed the products before they could reach customers.
For shoppers in Kano and beyond, the seizure is a reminder of the everyday risk of buying food and drinks that are no longer safe. Expired drinks can cause illness, and the cost of treating such sickness often falls on families already watching every naira.
What the council is saying
The Director of Enforcement and Removal of Substandard Products, Alhaji Auwalu A. Muhammad, said the agency was carrying out its duties in line with the law. He warned that the council would not hesitate to seize expired products, or items whose packaging information, including expiry dates, had been tampered with.
The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said enforcement would continue across markets, shops and supermarkets throughout the state. He said officers were doing lawful work to protect residents from illnesses linked to unsafe and expired products, and that the council would not tolerate any harassment or intimidation of its staff.
He urged traders to check their stock and voluntarily remove expired or damaged goods rather than hiding them or changing expiry dates. That cooperation, he said, would protect consumers' health, build public trust in businesses and help those businesses grow.
Dr Ibrahim also thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting the council and providing the resources it needs to do its work.
What happens next
The council said it will step up market surveillance and keep tracking expired and substandard products across Kano State. Traders should expect more inspections in the coming weeks.
The sources did not say whether the trader involved will face any penalty, and no one has been charged in connection with the seizure.
