Kano Assembly screens Governor Yusuf's spokesman, one other for commissioner
- Kano Assembly will screen Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa and Balarabe Sa'idu Gani for commissioner on Tuesday.
- Speaker Jibril Isma'il Falgore read Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's letter naming the two nominees.
- The screening follows last week's confirmation of six commissioner-nominees in an ongoing cabinet reshuffle.
The Kano State House of Assembly is set to screen two commissioner-nominees put forward by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 10am.
The nominees are Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor's spokesperson and Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House, and Hon. Balarabe Sa'idu Gani.
Speaker Jibril Isma'il Falgore announced the nominations during plenary on Monday after reading a letter from the governor, according to Tribune and Leadership. The Assembly's Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, confirmed the Tuesday screening in a statement.
"The House of Assembly will on Tuesday, as scheduled, screen the two commissioner-nominees submitted by the governor for confirmation," the statement said.
The exercise, the Assembly said, will follow the provisions of the Constitution and be led by the Speaker.
Why it matters
Commissioners head ministries that run schools, hospitals, roads and water across Kano, one of Nigeria's most populous states. Who sits in the State Executive Council affects how quickly those services reach ordinary residents.
The nominations come as the governor reshuffles his cabinet. Last week, the Assembly screened and confirmed six commissioner-nominees, among them two-time commissioner Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa and Professor Sani Lawan, a former chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission. Leadership named the former electoral chief as Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi.
If confirmed, Bature would move from managing the governor's media message to a full ministry portfolio.
What happens next
The nominees appear before lawmakers on Tuesday morning. If the House clears them, they can be sworn in as members of the State Executive Council.
